Understanding and Healing from PTSD: A Journey to Recovery

More than 5% of the USA’s population have PTSD, and women are twice as likely to suffer from PTSD. (National Center for PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a severe mental health condition that affects people of all genders and age groups. Despite its prevalence, many individuals living with PTSD struggle to access appropriate care and support.

What Is PTSD?

PTSD develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as:

  • Violence or Abuse:Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse can leave lasting scars.
  • Combat Exposure:Veterans often face prolonged exposure to life-threatening situations.
  • Natural Disasters:Surviving events like earthquakes, floods, or fires can trigger PTSD.
  • Accidents or Sudden Loss:Life-altering incidents such as car accidents or the unexpected death of a loved one.

Common symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Intrusive Thoughts:Reliving the trauma through flashbacks or nightmares.
  • Avoidance:Steering clear of reminders of the traumatic event.
  • Negative Changes in Thinking or Mood:Persistent feelings of guilt, shame, or hopelessness.
  • Hyperarousal:Being easily startled, irritable, or unable to relax.

The Long-Term Effects of Untreated PTSD

When PTSD goes unaddressed, it can significantly impact every aspect of a person’s life:

Mental Health Decline:Increased risk of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
Relationship Strain:Difficulty maintaining healthy connections due to trust and communication issues.
Physical Health Challenges:Chronic stress can lead to heart disease, digestive problems, and weakened immunity.
Reduced Quality of Life: Constant hypervigilance and emotional distress hinder daily functioning and joy.

Kenyatta Black is the first counseling service I've ever used, and I was blown away by the care I have received. My therapist, Jeanine, made me feel welcomed and heard. Unfortunately, life pushed me down, and I had to put therapy on the back burner for a few weeks. But I'm getting back into it this week, and I owe all the thanks for that to Krystal. She was so patient and understanding of my situation and made the process very smooth.

I was undecided if I wanted to go to therapy but ended up deciding to do an online one and wanted to try in person as well, see which was best for me. Krystal always answers the phone with such a positive attitude, which is amazing, as this is a new experience for me. Kenyatta has been my own personal therapist and she’s been amazing as well, but i’m very glad it’s been such a warm and welcoming experience!!
