WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE USING YOUR INSURANCE

Confidentiality & Privacy

Your privacy and confidentiality are essential to us. However, it’s important to understand that once your insurance company receives your information, we no longer have control over its privacy.

How Insurance Affects Privacy:

Once your insurance company receives details from your counselor, they may submit this information to a national Medical Information Database. This database is used by over 700 insurance companies to reduce fraud and assist in processing claims. While the database can be helpful for insurance purposes, it may impact your privacy in the following ways:
● The information about your diagnosis, including any mental health treatment, becomes accessible to insurance companies that can use it for underwriting purposes.
● Medical records, including session notes, are typically shared with your insurance company as part of the billing process.
● Your diagnosis may be used to justify the need for treatment and could affect your ability to obtain future insurance coverage or secure certain jobs, especially in the government, military, or positions requiring security clearances or health checks.

Impacts of a Diagnosis:

A mental health diagnosis can have various long-term effects, including:
● Impact on future employment, particularly in jobs requiring security clearances, military service, or aviation roles.
● Influence on obtaining individual health, life, or disability insurance, potentially increasing premiums or even disqualifying you from coverage.
● Possible repercussions for children, as a diagnosis, can impact their schooling and future employment opportunities.

Opting Out of Insurance:

Many clients choose not to use insurance for several reasons, including:
● A desire to avoid a diagnosis being recorded, ensuring greater privacy and control over the number and length of sessions.
● Not having to adhere to insurance restrictions or having the ability to maintain full confidentiality regarding mental health treatment.

Self-Pay Options:

If you prefer not to use insurance, we offer self-pay options to ensure you maintain full privacy. Our self-pay rates range from $60 to $120 per session. This allows you to avoid the potential risks associated with using insurance while still receiving high-quality care.
If you decide to use insurance, it is your responsibility to verify your benefits prior to your first appointment. Call the number on your insurance card to inquire about “outpatient mental health” benefits. The first page of our New Client Paperwork contains all the necessary information to help you determine your coverage.
